Crossroads
I am currently pursing my degree in programming. But now I am having second thoughts. I have completely fallen in love with ASL it is such a passion. I really really would like to be a deaf interpreter. I still love programming and computers but I don't have the passion. However, chosing interpreter as my career will basically kill me dream of moving to Scotland. They of course use Brittish Sign Language which is COMPLETELY different that American Sign Language. So when I have to chance to move out there my schooling and work experience will be useless. I would have to start all over, which wont get me citizenship. So do I go with my passion and try for a career I will love? Or do I stay on my current path and follow my dream? Obviously I want to figure out how to make them both work. Any ideas? Advise? Reality check?

Passion v. dream? Can one be a career and the other be a hobby, passion, or volunteer vocation? Sometimes we work to enable us to do the things we truly want. Any opportunities to learn BSL in the states?
ReplyDeleteMaybe that is the thing to do. Because I do worry about how easy it would be to get a job as interpreter so if I could volunteer that would be great. I honestly hadn't thought of looking into learning BSL here. Thank you!! Great input :)
ReplyDeleteVisualize how you would be able to move Scotland. What do you need to find out to make a decision that will not only impact you but your girls? Do you have any contacts in Scotland?
ReplyDeleteConsider all your skill-sets beyond formal education, women are notorious for discounting their value.
Keep dreaming, make plans, and remember "life's a journey not a destination." Good luck!
I think loving your job would make it worth going to everyday! It would make you and your girls happy.
ReplyDeleteProgrammers here are being outsourced to other countries. Maybe you can get a job in Scotland to work at a company here? LOL (no, maybe India)
I really like your blog. You did a nice job on it.
Thank you for your imput everyone! I have also asked a lot of friends and some family members and have a ton to think about. I'm researching all of my options.
